A quirky, funny love story with an edge
- Book: The Starling Dance
- Location: Rome
- Author: Lucy Elena
I loved this book!
It bursts with sunshine and glorious descriptions of Rome, while managing to convey the slight madness that can ensue when everything gets a bit too hot for too long. It starts as most conventional romances do – (ghosted) girl meets (unavailable) boy, but quickly transforms into something quite different and rather magical, as the three main characters find ways to see past their demons and preoccupations to imagine new beginnings. The book is quirky and very funny , but doesn’t shy away from bigger, more serious issues, such as the impact of poor mental health and the fate of the ‘ unseen’ residents of Rome’s tourist streets. Look out for the brilliant cast of minor characters – weed smoking Eva the erotic poet, Mickey the Senegalese asylum seekers who sells (and wears) giant plastic glasses, Antonio the seemingly disinterested cafe owner and the menagerie of journalists in the newsroom. And those starlings – what are they up to?
