This is THE book to read if you want to learn about the history of Barcelona and of Catalonia because Hughes writes about both. Although it is more a history than a travel book, while reading about the history you are introduced to places that you will probably want to visit. It is very readable. I read the book before I first came to Barcelona and because of it on that visit I went to see the Hospital de Sant Pau and the Palau de la Musica. They were well worth the price of the book and although they might be mentioned in a list of a tourist guidebook, you don’t get the full meaning of the place as you do with the background that Hughes gives you. Barcelona is a lot more than the Sagrada Familia and La Rambla, and Hughes introduces you to just about all of it.
