A Taste of Kiev
- Book: Snegurochka
- Location: Kyiv
- Author: Judith Heneghan
Just finished reading this beautifully written book. I have not visited Ukraine, but Judith Heneghan describes the life in Kiev in a way that I feel I have been there. But, it was in black and white! That is how it felt to me. Shopping seemed to be an ordeal. Trying to find decent fresh fruit and vegetables almost an impossibility. I would not liked to have had to move there as Rachel did to be with her freelance journalist husband, Lucas with a small baby.
There is a good sense of place, I do not wish to visit the Ukraine but have had an armchair taste. It came across as bleak and a struggle to live go about normal life with a suspicion you were being watched or criticised. I loved the characters, Zoya, Elena and the contrasting female personality of Vee. The language in the book is beautiful, with very descriptive text, almost poetic. I wonder how Rachel faired.
