An Inconvenient Woman
- Book: An Inconvenient Woman
- Location: Los Angeles
- Author: Stéphanie Buelens
An Inconvenient Woman has so much more than the usual book of psychological suspense. The characters are real people, with complicated issues. I came to know both Claire and Sloane, the story’s two narrators, and to feel what they went through during the course of the novel. The writing is clean and clear, with a few lines that stayed in my mind. For example, “Divorce is an eraser.” Boy, is that true! Some lines made me smile, as when Claire talks about women who smash the cars of men who have done them wrong. Then she says, “If a woman’s fury could be soothed that easily, there’d be no cars left on the road.” Claire is a freelance French teacher, but she also knows a lot about painting and mythology. The reader learns these things just by being with her. I felt smarter after reading this book, and that’s one of the best things anyone can say about a novel. These added elements can sometimes slow down the story, but in this case, they only made the book move faster. You often hear about books people couldn’t put down. An Inconvenient Woman is actually one of those book. Once you start, you’re hooked, and the ride is so quick and effortless, that before you know it, you’ve read that last – in this case – lovely scene. Highly recommended.
