International wildife expert, Phillip Royle, is summoned to Florida when his former colleague, Daniel Morton, has disappeared. Soon, Morton’s body is found badly mauled in a tiger cage. What was he doing there? Royle and his new partner, Charlie Lacey, set out to find the answer. The quest has them jetting off to California, Mexico, Florida and Australia, on the trail of criminals engaged in the lucrative illegal trade in rare and endangered species of birds as well as international drug smugglers. There’s a good twist at the end leading to a fast-paced denouement.
The theme of wildlife crime made an unusual and interesting one for a thriller. I see from a TF blog interview with him that the author has worked for many years in the field of conservation and his passion for birds shines through. The descriptions of the Australian outback were particularly evocative. A recommended read if you like a thriller where you learn something too. My only criticism is that the style was a little long winded at times. In a thriller, I would expect something more pacey.
