Bayan is one of the few books that construct a cross seasonal optimism in life while persuading its reader to be solution-oriented in each stage of aging process. Apart from the macro level theme, there is a wast intangible yet important are of aging is strongly touched by the author along with well manifested skills in exploring cultures. I have read his book Behind the Eclipse that is a strong evident of Rupasinghe’s outstanding set of skills in setting stories very sophisticatedly in the cultural context. He has done it bette in Bayan. The relationship between Ivan and the instrument ‘Bayan”, I wonder what the author did not name the book “Bayanist”, says a lot about the relationships we build with inanimate objects as we grow old, when our children flee the nests leaving us in complete isolation. Rich in literature, culture and philosophy, Bayan is one of the best books that can be recommended for slow readers who wanna explore every single line and what is between lines.
