This genre of book is quickly becoming one of my favourites to read. Books set in faraway colonial lands are generally so evocative of location – and ‘Circumstance’ is no exception! There were times when reading this book, where I actually thought I could smell and hear the sounds of a Malaysian jungle. For me, the writing style was very unique and I really enjoyed it. A mixture of letters and many overlapping perspectives made it really enjoyable to read. It’s quite a slow book, not that I’m sure that really matters as the descriptions and characters keep it going nicely, but I would say it could easily be 100 pages shorter.
