The main character of this novel is a poor, uneducated girl making her living off of men in 1931 Berlin. Through her eyes the contradictions in society are sharply visible, as are the hypocrisies of a nation rushing to destruction. I found the main character extremely sympathetic, and the whole story illuminating.
