Drips with Atmosphere

  • Book: A Free Man of Color
  • Location: New Orleans
  • Author: Barbara Hambly

Review Author: Janinel

This is the first book in a mystery series with an African American detective. It is 1833 in New Orleans. Benjamin January has been trained as a physician in France but can’t practice for pay because he’s black, so he works as a musician tutoring children of the wealthy and playing at parties.
I found this series when I asked a librarian for a book rich in setting in New Orleans. He said, “this drips with atmosphere.” The mysteries are good; I’ve read a number of the series, but I mostly read them because they are the closest thing to time-travel and virtual travel to New Orleans that I know of.
