The Miniaturist, set in 17th century Amsterdam, is a world of wealth and privilege on the surface, and of religious and moral oppression underneath. Young and innocent, Nella Oortman arrives in the city to marry wealthy merchant Johannes Brandt. While he is kind to her, he is distant. And there is a reason for all of this. Johannes provides his new bride a replica of the house, and Nella hires a miniaturist (whom she never sees) to furnish the doll house.

This book hits all the right notes for me – beautiful world-building, a heroine to root for, and suspense.
