A glorious memoir that glimpses inside the life of an oil baron daughter. So little is known about Azerbaijan, when it was part of the Russian Empire, that accounts like this are so intriguing. The book is funny, moving and sometimes quite shocking. It traces Banine’s life from the late nineteenth century to being forced to flee when the Red Army marched into Baku in 1920. An engrossing read for anyone interested in the ancient city on the edge of the Caspian Sea.
