A friend gave me a copy of ‘Dirty Pictures’ to read on the plane and it certainly helped me while away the hours trapped in coach. I have been in Amsterdam several times on business and never got much of a chance to absorb the mystique of the city. This book, mostly set in Amsterdam, (there are side trips to Ghent, Venice, and Geneva), seemed to expose the hidden beauties and the magnificent traditions of the town. The author, Patricia Ketola, does it by some miraculous slight of hand that both informs and enchants. Although the emphasis is on Amsterdam her take on Geneva, a city I’ve visited,, is wildly humorous and pretty much accurate. Thoroughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it to adventurous readers.
