An interesting account by a native Australian (I think) of trips to Tuscany, set around food, food and more food. Recipes to make and descriptions to whet the appetite. Great descriptions of Italian restaurant life, a few love encounters on the way, it’s very Italian. Mangia che ti passa. And a quick trip to Paskowki’s Cafe in Florence (I have been there!) – made it all feel very real. And interesting snippets on the way – Chianti Classico covers 7000 hectares between Florence and Siena and the wine has to be produced with a minimum of 80% Sangiovese grapes. There! I bet most of you didn’t know that!
Interesting, they have a couple of trips over to the island of Giglio, which of course now is forever linked with the Costa Concordia sinking.
I think I chose not to give the book a slightly higher rating because I found the descriptive style, which is in the present tense, just a bit odd and occasionally breathlessly irritating. Otherwise, though, a terrific journey through the food of Italy!
