Germany devastated
- Book: The Book Thief
- Location: Munich, Sydney
- Author: Markus Zusak
A very memorable, vividly written depiction of the experiences of one German girl during World War II– many characters to care about. The one thing I didn’t like about it was the framing device of having it narrated by Death. This had a softening and distancing effect — I can see how the author might have thought this was necessary, since otherwise the darkness of the story might have seemed unbearable. But I didn’t like the sentimentality anyhow. The characters were living a grim life, do them the justice of not softening that. (In the last chapter, it was mentioned that the main character would go on to be a writer– I’d like to read the story of the rest of her life. How did she integrate these terrible experiences into her adult personality?)
