The gated community where Paul lives is an odd place—and as he explores its oddities, he comes to consider how the land changed between wilderness, then later citrus groves, and now a housing development, and how those changes still have effects.

This is a middle-grade/preteen book with a whole lot packed into it. A sports story, a class-conflict story (as Paul befriends Latino tangerine-growers), and a sinister family drama. Maybe it’s a little over-dramatic. But on the whole it’s extremely interesting, and it’s worth reading for the setting alone.
