A glimpse of life in rural France circa 1950s
- Book: Tita
- Location: France
- Author: Marie Houzelle
After spending three years living in Paris, I was thrilled to receive an early review copy of Tita. I was especially looking forward to reading about a girl’s life in a small town in Southern France and I enjoyed every page.
This beautifully written novel starts as though we simply join Tita one day and ends with a seemingly random scene in the car with her family. With its generous use of French words, explanations of customs and descriptions of daily rituals, I really felt as though I was living French life right alongside Tita. Her trials and joys are easy to relate to and there are plenty of glimpses of adult life through her eyes as she deals with her family members and their friends.
My only negative comment would be that I longed for more of the story. I think that speaks to the quality of the writing as well as the way the author brings readers into the story to engage with the characters.
I really enjoyed this book and look forward to more from Marie Houzelle! Recommended!
