  • Author: Abraham Verghese

This was recommended by a friend and I loved it so much that I have bought it in hardback to join my ‘best ever’ reads! The story is captivating and inhabited by wonderful engaging characters – there is no cliche and there is no sentimentality – this is a richly evocative novel that transports the reader to Ethiopia (and later to the USA) such that you can smell the rain, and become completely immersed in the landscape surrounding Missing Hospital. The descriptions of medical procedure are detailed, fascinating and possibly not for the squeamish and the narrative combines historical fact with a glorious fictional epic saga. It is impossible to sum up this novel in a few words – I was bereft when I finished it, having taken every step, cried and laughed with everyone I met. Just superb.
