I knew very little about Haiti, save for what I learned in the occasional newspaper article when something awful happened there. So, in a very real way, Michael Matza’s novel “Haiti, Love and Murder…In the Season of Soup Joumou” was my introduction to that fascinating and troubled country. I was aware of its existence, of course, but the way it looked, smelled, tasted, and felt? I had no clue until now.

What a unique way Matza’s book has of presenting Haiti to us. By grabbing the reader in its opening paragraph, creating a fascinating cast of characters, playing adroitly with language, revealing and withholding by turns, pacing the action for maximum effect, revealing elements of plot at exactly the right time, Matza has created a richly rewarding reading experience and a page-turner in the best sense of the word. I give it 6 stars out of 5.”
