Hanoi just leapt off the pages of this novel, a gentle amble back and forth through the history of the various occupations, bringing together the lives of several different people. I did, though find it hard to bond with the characters and occasionally it would take me a couple of paragraphs before I clocked which era we were in, as it tended to meander about a bit. Learned a tremendous amount, though, through the pages of this book about the history and occupation of Hanoi, so for that I will give it 4*.
