I have been to Venice many times in many seasons. We stay off the beaten track to do what we can just to bathe in the magic of the place. If friends ask us what to do I always say first to get a sense of the place. I buy them this book. Because of all the Venice books I have read, this is the one that stays with me visit after visit as I wander down a narrow way.
It is not a book for everyone. “In the Company of the Courtesan” is deeply romantic and lush and lyrical and brutal too. But you will never forget it and you will forever see Venice differently.
