The Malaysian setting is particularly well drawn, as is the era of the 50s in which the book is set. Lydia is away visiting a sick friend and upon her return discovers that her family has left – she is told they have gone to Ipoh, but in reality her husband and daughters have gone back to the UK. It is a gripping and emotional read and a great debut. Definitely an author to watch in the future.
