A very well told story around the events that unfold as the Japanese occupation of Java comes to its end and the Second World War draws to a close. This portrayal is even-handed in its treatment of the effect of the war on all the involved parties, from the imprisoned Dutch colonists to the Japanese soldiers and the rising local communists. The book engages the emotions by the skillful portrayal and characterisation of the people caught up in the conflict.
