At the end of this sometimes moving often desperately enthralling novel the narrator says of himself, “I wandered bizarrely, often with that feeling of standing outside myself as a separate and dispassionate watcher…” and it is a marker for how strange and extreme his life has become because of what he has experienced. Difficult to find emotional release when you have been so utterly uprooted and the people you care about have been attacked, disappeared, murdered before your eyes.
