A novel set on a cruise ship, to wit on the Narwhal with its 12 decks, sailing from Miami to Havana. This novel hasn’t done anything to really motivate me to book a cruise, to be honest, what with missing persons, LOADS of people and cups of watery coffee included in the all-in price, where an espresso is considered a “speciality drink” for which you would have to pay extra. Can this be true, I ask myself?

Mercy Sprivey has ‘won’ a trip on the ship but she can’t remember entering any competition. When she turns up with her husband, Nolan, and discovers one of her fellow passengers – Selfa – has links to her past (and who also ‘won’ a trip on the sailing), all her instincts move into overdrive. Selfa then goes missing.

The story hinges on the death of Mercy’s former lover, Lorenzo, who died in rather odd circumstances.  For me the opening chapters left me a little confused about the timelines and subsequent trajectory but thereafter it is easy enough to follow as the ship sails on.
