A two week break in Moraitika, Corfu. What’s not to love!
Spyri runs a restaurant in London. How ever busy she is in her life, she always ensures she gets her holiday in Moraitika, in order to connect with the spirit of her grandmother in particular, and in whose house she stays. It gives her the chance to re-energise and recharge her batteries after long hours in the kitchen.
On this particular visit she is prompted to think back to meeting Markos, twenty odd Summers ago. She has never managed to let go of her unrequited love for him and that is perhaps the reason she has never really had a relationship over the intervening years. And now it transpires that Mrs Alexandra, his aunt on the island and with whom he stayed that one fateful Summer, has passed away and there is every chance that he might attend her funeral.
Given the title of the novella, it is probably no spoiler to say that he does arrive and the two of them have many years to catch up on. There is also input from family members, long since gone but who are spiritually still with the Spyri and Markos.
Food is a great lure for this author’s work and of course Spyri is a talented chef; you will undoubtedly be salivating by the end of the novella.
