Chemical Cocktail is the third book in Fiona Erskine’s ‘Chemical’ series featuring chemical engineer and ‘amateur’ detective Jaq Silver. It is every bit as good as the first two (Chemical Detective and Chemical Reaction). Fiona is in her other life a professional chemical engineer, and she uses her ‘know-how’ to create eminently readable thrillers.

In all three books, Jaq is quite often the only female at high level meetings, on cargo ships, in factories, and on offshore oil rigs. Her life gives the reader a look at a female character working in a totally male-dominated profession.

In Chemical Cocktail, Jaq inherits a travelling safe full of old documents when her mother dies. Amid conspiracies and corruption, she travels from Portugal to Brazil to get to the bottom of a family mystery. But she is not the only one with an interest in her unusual inheritance. Racing against the clock as threats to her life increase on all sides, Jaq must use her scientific ‘know-how’ to save what matters most. The pressure is intense with violence and murder following her everywhere.

In TripFiction terms Brazil is well described – you get a real sense of place from Rio de Janeiro and São Paolo in the south up to Salvador de Bahia in the north.

Chemical Cocktail is a worthy addition to the series, and a book that is recommended for anyone who loves a fast moving thriller.
