This novel is an immersive and fairly quick read.

DCi Bob Valentine is juggling his family commitments and dealing with feelings about a new case, with which he has been presented. Ritualistic abuse is being uncovered and it touches all echelons of society, and images of Abbie, a teenager and the first victim, drills into his consciousness – the vision of her body and damage inflicted upon her is truly horrific.

There is nice banter between the people working, which makes the novel feel quite human, given that what the police face seems so inhuman….

There is a nice sense of setting, Ayr in Scotland, as the team travels around Ayrshire and over to Glasgow.
