Eva’s cousin in this work of fiction, but the real cousin Gertraud Weisker did indeed come to keep Eva company at Berchtesgaden. It is all credit to the author that she makes the story feel tantalisingly real – it is loosely based on what might have happened. Beautifully written it brings the mounting pathos to life, the environment and a sense of what it might have been like to be up that mountain with Hitler’s entourage. It is a real shame that this novel is currently out of print – Della Banks –
