This is the first in the Robin Lyons series (no. 3 came out in 2024)
Robin has been sacked from the Met for sticking her neck out (she has a moral compass). She arrives back home in Birmingham with her teenage daughter in tow and is living in her parents’ house, sleeping in the bunk bed of her childhood.
Dad and Mum (in particular) have a few home truths and cutting comments to share with her, to add insult to injury. She doesn’t have enough savings for a deposit yet on her own place, so this is the status quo for the foreseeable future.
She gets some freelance investigative work and soon she is looking at the disappearance of a young woman but the main thrust of her investigations is diverted to the death of her best friend Corinna. Her husband is in the police crosshairs but she is convinced of his innocence.
This is a reasonably pacey read, that picks up in intensity as the story evolves. There are a lot of characters to manage and that can be a detracting feature in this essentially well-paced novel.
Birmingham makes a good and gritty backdrop for the story.
