Lead Review (First-Time Caller)
- Book: First-Time Caller
- Location: Baltimore
- Author: B K Borison
When one of Lucie’s best friends says of her dating history: “You rarely date, and when you do, you somehow manage to find the worst men in the universe”, Lucie knows she is failing miserable on the relationship front.
Lucie’s young daughter, Maya knows it too.
Aiden Valentine is the host on Baltimore’s romance hotline “Heartstrings” and is described as a “brooding Disney Prince“. He has few listeners, he is becoming cynical about love – even though he is only twenty nine – and he is turning into a curmudgeon, and as the novel opens, his pal Jackson is giving him a light dressing-down about his attitude.
Maya calls Aiden up, but Lucie walks in on the live, late night conversation Maya is having with the presenter, and once she has snatched the phone and addressed the inappropriateness of an unknown adult having a conversation with a twelve year old, she finds herself lured into sharing a bit more than is perhaps wise. Remember, this is all happening live and in real-time. And now the conversation has gone viral. Even Maya’s father (who lives next door) drops in to have words about the situation.
Lucie and Aiden, of course, meet up in person, initially over a pair of microphones, winning over the listeners, answering questions. And then…
This is a cute storyline, easy to read and reassuring in its predictability.
Setting isn’t strong.
