Murder At The Allotment is already no.10 in the Whitstable Pearl Mystery series and this can be read as a standalone. Pearl – our inimitable investigator and “magnate for cadavers” – soon feels like a familiar figure to the reader as the novel opens, set amongst her family and friends and in the heart of her community. She still runs her restaurant and is engaged to McGuire.

In this novel, a right kerfuffle amongst the kale plants is building in the allotments at Prospect Field, fired by DFLs (people who descend on the town from London – “Down From London”) and Pearl’s investigative nose starts to twitch. When a body is found, she has knows what she has to do.

Whitstable, its history and character are beautifully brought to life in this series, perfect for literary tourism.
