HAITI & Europe (19th Century)

Queen of Exiles by Vanessa Riley

This is the fictional re-imainging of the life of Queen Marie-Louise Coidavid was the Queen of the Kingdom of Haiti (Hayti) from 1811 to 1820. She was married to Henri Christophe. When he died she went into exile, first in England and then she spent her last years in Tuscany.

This is quite an involving story, more so because it is based on a true person. The research seems very detailed and expansive and does a good job of introducing readers to a period, place and the people that perhaps are generally unfamiliar many readers. I certainly had no idea of Marie-Louise’s place in history.

There are lovingly crafted details of the times and the sense of her strength and resolve, given her skin colour in a European setting was extremely unusual. The length perhaps overall could have been reduced because it is a stretch to get to the end.

And finally, the #bookcover (UK left / USA right) really don’t mirror the content – especially the USA cover, neither would catch my eye in a bookshop. Would you be tempted to pick a copy up?
