THE FRENCH RIVIERA 1925
No. 16 in the Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes mystery series
It is the Golden Age of the Riviera, all the famous people are in residence. Mary Russell, the astute, cultured and savvy wife of Sherlock Holmes takes a boat trip from Venice, and three weeks later joins the illustrious set. At that point in history the Summer months were the low season, many hotels were closed. But accommodation is sourced and the mystery, jollity and socialising can begin.
Amongst the glitterati is a certain Mrs Hudson, the couple’s erstwhile housekeeper, now in a very different – and seemingly undercover – role. Mix in a White Russian and some villains and gangsters, filthy lucre and goings-on at the Monte Carlo Casino, and the author weaves a tale that is immersive in time and place. I read this whilst on the Côte d’Azur and was charmed by the feel of footsteps past.
It is probably best to read previous titles as there are clearly relationships and history that are still at play and can prove a little elusive to the uninitiated when read as a standalone.
