Lead Review (Rory Bean and the Reluctant Ghosts)
- Book: Rory Bean and the Reluctant Ghosts
- Location: Pentrebach
- Author: Caryn Schafer (Illustrator), Trudie Thomas
Rory Bean lives with his parents at the Gruffydd Arms in Pentrebach, South Wales. One day they let slip that they are thinking of moving to a flat in Dorset, because, despite offering mouth watering food, the pub is failing to attract customers. It boils down to the fact that the locals believe the building is haunted. Indeed, Rory is pretty sure they are right, because things happen, he hears noises, bumps and crashes and things often aren’t where he left them. It is certainly more than just a creaky old building.
He confides in his best friend, Bea, and soon they are having a drink of delicious blackcurrant cordial with the local witch and her cats. She shares she can concoct a potion to reveal the ghosts but it will be down to Rory to deal with them.. and she senses he is very much up to the task of spotting a ghost.
Rory and Bea start researching the pub’s history and they soon discover some interesting things and quite the ethereal adventure begins.
A really nicely told story of life in a pub and how to tackle the problem posed by a motley crew of ghosts.
Lovely illustrations by Caryn Schafer
