The prospect of a stultifying marriage to a man she doesn’t love…. on the eve of her high society wedding, Vivienne George decides to flee and heads to Northern Queensland, descending on a small farming community, far removed from the glitz, tedium and glamour of home life thus far.
The eponymous lake of the title provides cooling waters, where Vivienne swims, and where she meets rambunctious Josie. Someone whom she would probably never had the opportunity of meeting under more normal circumstances.
But there is the murky question of a curse which has spread its hold over the women of the locality A decade or so ago, Celeste Starr – a beautiful actress – died in untoward circumstances in the waters of the lake. Since then things for the women of the town have never been the same.
An unusual mystery set against the lush backdrop of Northern Queensland, where the setting adds to the tension in the town, the swirling vapours from the foliage adding a darkness to the story.
A good and well written story set against a well depicted sense of place.
