Lead Review (The Hideout)
- Book: The Hideout
- Location: Stockholm, Sweden
- Author: Camilla Grebe
This is an imaginative story with three main protagonists. Essentially this is a character-driven story but the trajectory of the unfolding events, with the twists and turns, is what makes this a good read.
Samuel, a teenager, has got involved with the wrong crowd, a drug deal has gone wrong and he has to hide. He has been brought up by Pernilla, who comes from a deeply religious background and she struggles to withstand the influence that the religious community continues to hold over her, including her father.
A pretty mangled body turns up and then another. Manfred is the investigator in the case and like the other protagonists, he also has quite a backstory.
The author is skilled at creating a good story with plenty of atmosphere. The chapters are fairly short, so although this stretches to nearly 500 pages, it proves to be quite a quick read. The sense of place is well rendered.
