Hannah is living in Sausalito with her husband Owen and his teen daughter Bailey. Owen is at work, at The Shop, a tech start up in which he is heavily involved.
The news hits, that the founding CEO of the company has been taken into custody and the authorities are investigating a terrific level of fraud and embezzlement. A note is passed to Hannah simply saying “Protect Her”, clearly penned in her husband’s hand and referring to his daughter. Bailey, too, has a short note, which she shares with her stepmother, which is followed up by the discovery of a holdall containing a large amount of money, deposited in her locker at school.
Owen is not answering Hannah’s calls, something is really off. Where is Owen? What part has he played in the demise of The Shop?
Hannah has a great sleuthing nose and soon she is making connections that take her and Bailey to Austin in search of answers. As they move through the city, drawing on information from the past and from Bailey’s memories, they understand the danger that is building and the secrets that are surfacing….
A well written and engaging novel, with a good level of tension, that is well paced but relies a little too heavily on Hannah’s capricious abilities for deduction.
