You know how loud the world feels sometimes? Don’t you just want to dial things down, mute, and shut out the noise?
Sara Javed is an author about to win a big literary award, who decides to stop speaking. She is desperate to find autonomy in her life and somehow get control back. A domino effect ensues and then the big divide occurs, pitting the Verbals versus the Non-Verbals against each other.
This is quite a political novel, where a lot of elements feel stuffed into the narrative, thought-provoking on one hand, jumbled on the other. Some of the big topics of the day, back in the early 2020s, are featured but the author is careful not to come down on one side or the other.
This is an interesting premise, which tackles some large themes.
Setting isn’t particularly strong.
