September is plodding along in her supermarket job, she is with Shaun who is running up debts and generally life is proving to be quite an effort. (Shaun, I am pleased to say, does not last the course).

She inherits a large house in Harrogate from her great aunt Lucia, whom she has never known, an amazing surprise. As soon as she can, she pops over to explore it. Lucia’s cleaner is there busying herself, getting ready for her great aunt’s book group which is still running, despite her death. The members, surely, can help paint a picture of her great aunt and perhaps she can discover more about the family she never knew. It is also a wonderful opportunity to discover books (the first on the reading list is The Color Purple by Alice Walker) and hear what everyone has to say about the club’s choice.

It transpires that Lucia bought presents every year for the great niece she never knew, storing them away no doubt to find a sense of connection, and gradually September learns about her birth family and history which warms her soul. There are journals of recorded “kindnesses” and she determines to keep this lovely tradition going.

A heart-warming novel of self-discovery (which includes a dog), an engaging and up-beat read.

Given the book is set in Harrogate, there is of course a visit to Betty’s.
