The year is 1315:
The Swiss Confederacy was a loose confederation of independent small Cantons, formed during the 13th century. The alliance among the valley communities of the central Alps was designed to safeguard trade and ensure peace along trade routes through the mountains.
Magda is the central character, living in and around Morgarten (Canton Schwyz). And remember the iconic story of Wilhelm Tell? His son – upon whose head the apple was placed and then fired at – also has a significant role in this medieval story. As the months pass, a burgeoning frienship begins to form between the two but the romantic applecart is wobbled when Sébastien, a French fugitive, arrives. He is clearly a troubled and mysterious young man and Walter, given his family background, is not daunted in the face of adversity.
The author conjures up daily alpine life, the locals having to be constantly vigilant, under daily threat from the Habsburg empire just across the border. At the heart is a sweet romance, set against a period of harsh political upheaval. It is an interestingly informative story that takes the reader to the time and place.
