The Woman on the Edge by Ruth Mancini
This novel has a dramatic opening, which kept me hooked until the plot becomes pretty implausible and a touch convoluted. There are multiple points of view and an unreliable central character who takes her readers up hill and down dale. As a construct, this novel has so much potential and there is a good level of tension throughout.
Tate is accused of pushing a woman off the top of a building Eastcheap, in the city of London and we soon discover the identity of the victim and a possible motive for murder – but of course, there are further twists and turns that throw the initial hypothesis up into the air. But who is really responsible for the killing? And why?
Overall, I felt this storyline became quite muddled – there were what seemed to be continuity issues and it wasn’t immediately obvious if this was down to poor editing or it’s just how the author intended to cause a bit of a smoke and mirrors screen as the plot unfolded. On several occasions, I found myself turning back several pages when things became unclear, in the belief I had missed some crucial happening or had misunderstood something, which sometimes made for a rather fractured and unsatisfying reading experience.
There is some real positivity for this novel: over on Amazon UK there are over 2000 ratings of which 48% currently are 5*, so please make up your own mind.
