Catholic primary school teacher Cushla meets and falls in love with a married Protestant barrister Michael, whilst she is working in her mother’s pub in 1970s Belfast. The story is set against the Troubles of Northern Ireland and brings to life the extremely difficult period of religious tumult.

It goes into detail about the impact on individuals who found themselves caught up in the warfare, the toll of decimated innocent lives and the fear of finding love beyond tightly regulated religious parameters. Cushla is vibrantly brought to life, Michael slightly less so but overall this is a book that will stay with you.

If you want to explore the intricacies and personal stories of people affected, then this is an excellent novel to pick up.
