This is a prequel to The Beresford, so we are gaining more insight into this particular institution (too strong a description? Maybe not 😉) and finding out more about the characters behind many of the dark doings.

As the novel opens, there is quite the sensory attack – Daniella Ortega exits the lift (one of those old fashioned elevators with a concertina grille, that grind between floors) to a cacophony of sound, reminding us that all life is sequestered here in rooms that are divided from each other by paper thin walls. The staging of the creaking, ominous building is set and then the characters are slotted into their various rooms, coming out to interact and challenge, as they process through their creepy and oftentimes gruesome lives.

The inhabitants are an eclectic bunch and I would imagine the author had quite some fun constructing characters with quirks and foibles and some very dark psyches.

This is not for the faint-hearted but if you like a touch (more than a touch) of horror, something a bit different, then this might just hit the spot.

Location in terms of TripFiction and sense of place is non existent but the sense of a grand old building, that creaks and groans is wonderfully depicted.
