This is Emma Healey’s second book and quite different to ‘Elizabeth is Missing’, which I really enjoyed. It is set in London and Derby and the main theme is about a mother and daughter relationship. The daughter goes missing for 4 days whilst she is in the Peak District with her mother on a group art week.
I became a little irritated with Jen, the mother and it made me think about my relationship with my sons. Jen wants to unearth what happened during those missing 4 days.
In terms of a sense of place, London, the home, feels insignificant except the underground is described quite a lot. The week in Derby gave me a feel for the place in particular the caves, the landscape, woods etc and I now wonder if there is some significance with the underground mentions. I’m most probably just making it up!
The cover gives away the big secret if you look at it with the knowledge of the outcome.
