A jewel of a book, meant to be read with a quiet, appreciative air, as if one was a studious cardigan-bedecked girl in the 1950s…it’s a frame of an older woman’s youthful tumult, and i love the nested story. Lucia touches on some deep veins of philosophy when she asks “Why…do my aspirations sadden me? Why do i always feel that i have to give up something i love in order to climb higher?” (176). And boy, does she have my number when she says “my biggest problem with the opposite sex is that i know how to be happy on my own” (233). Complicated patterns mirrored in our lives make this reflective volume a lovely meditation, as well as a beautifully described jaunt into fashionable 1950s New York City, and cozy Italian Greenwich village!
