Needed more ‘show’ and less ‘tell’
- Book: The Wraith’s Return
- Location: Martha's Vineyard
- Author: Raemi A Ray
This book had many promising elements: the picturesque setting of Martha’s Vineyard, buried treasure, mysterious murders, a handsome detective, a charming playboy best friend, and our heroine, fresh from her English homeland. However, the story crafted from these elements moved quite slowly and lacked tension until the last 40 pages.
Upon reflection, I think the book was too much ‘tell’ and not enough ‘show’. Not so much happened to the protagonists (until the end). Most of the action happened “off-stage” and the main characters learned about it later.
Having said that, I liked a couple of the characters a lot and many of the places in the book were real which provided a sense of Martha’s Vineyard.
