Needs Better Proofreading!
- Book: Shouting From The Summits
- Location: Malaysia (Malaya)
- Author: Kala Ramachandran
I was excited by the description of this book, but unfortunately the book itself does not live up to its promise.
Kala Ramachandra is brought up in Malaysia. She develops a stammer at a young age, not helped by her strict schoolteacher father caning her hands whenever she cannot get her words out.
As a teenager, Kala is taken on a school trip to Raman Negara National Park, where she acquires a taste for trekking & climbing.
Kala describes her problems growing up as a child with a stammer & the strategies she employs to help overcome her difficulties.
She gives details of the various climbs she has participated in, usually with dates & mountain heights included! I had looked forward to descriptions of Mount Everest, as I have visited Nepal myself, but Kala never made it to Everest, due to the earthquakes in Nepal in 2015.
My difficulties in appreciating this book are twofold. Firstly, the written English is very poor. I never write in books, but, as a former English teacher, I could not resist “marking” what I was reading!
Secondly, the style of writing is very wooden & lacking in description. For example, instead of describing in detail what she sees on the mountain, Kala contents herself with saying, “I enjoyed the beauty of the nature.”
I applaud Kala for succeeding in managing her stammer & for getting as far as the Base Camp of Aconcagua but, sadly, I cannot say that I enjoyed her book. I finished it only because I had agreed to review it.
