Novel set in Illinois (“A refreshing, interesting, intriguing and evocative book…”)
- Book: The Hundred-Year House
- Location: Illinois
- Author: Rebecca Makkai
A refreshing, interesting, intriguing and evocative book set in North America. It follows the history of a house and those who inhabited it over one hundred years.
But, not in the way you may expect. (I will let you read the book to discover what I mean)
No-one is quite who they seem – or are they? A ghost, her daughter, a granddaughter, her husband and a colony of other characters. Some pleasant and others – oh, not pleasant at all!
This is where Rebecca excels as she develops her characters in ways that are, at times unexpected. Empathy for certain characters change to that of slight revulsion as their actions impact on the lives of others. Other characters grow on one as the tale expands and characters human psyche takes over.
Who stayed at Laurelfield house when it was an art colony? Did they leave unpublished works that some would prefer to stay hidden. And the paintings? Was there a secret there too?
So, lots of questions and lots of digesting of the twists and turns as you turn the pages. Not a book to read quickly. Reflect and start to unravel to history on the house and the impact it has on so many lives
