Novel set in SARDINIA (The Whispering Wind)
- Book: The Whispering Wind
- Location: Italy, Sardinia (Sardegna)
- Author: Lexa Dudley
From the dramatic mountain scenery and beautiful beaches to the welcoming people and delicious cuisine, the Mediterranean island of Sardinia is easy to fall for. And I fell heavily, on the very first day I set foot on her soil. When asked to review, Lexa Dudley’s novel ‘The Whispering Wind‘, set on this lovely Italian island, I was eager in the expectation that it would bring back some wonderful memories.
Right from the first few pages I was hooked, as Lexa brings to life the Sardinia I so fondly remembered. Elise, our heroin, is a visitor to the island, escaping a loveless marriage. When Beppe, a stereotypically tall, dark and handsome hero, meets the lovely stranger he falls hopelessly in love with the married Elise, despite knowing that it breaks every rule that he has been brought up to believe in by his fervently religious mother.
Throughout the book Lexa paints a vivid picture of the warm and welcoming Sardinian people, as well as the beauty of the island which Beppe delights in showing Elise – you can almost smell the sea air and taste the roasted suckling pig. More than that, this novel gives a wonderful insight into the culture, traditions, history and sense of community that anyone with an interest in Sardinia will find fascinating.
This is a novel that I found hard to put down as it swept me along on a roller-coaster of an emotional ride. The unexpected twist towards the end had me literally sobbing out loud, something a book has never managed to achieve before. I couldn’t recommend it more highly to anyone who loves Sardinia or simply enjoys reading well-written romantic novels. And if you’ve never been to Sardinia you’ll be yearning to go there, long before you turn the final page.
