One of my favourite books
- Book: The Boy in the Striped Pyamas
- Location: Auschwitz/Birkenau, Berlin
- Author: John Boyne
This book is one of my favourite books. i have read many times, and will no doubt be able to read it many times more in the future. Set in Germany during the hight of Hitler’s power, it follows the life of Bruno, a 9 year old boy, who is the son of a Nazi official. One day Bruno returns home from school to be told that his family are moving to a different part of germany. what Bruno doesnt know is that his Father has been promoted to head of a Conentration camp. From then on the story progresses through the eyes of Bruno and his inncocence and naivity. Unlikely then, however, whilst playing in his garden which is next to the camp, Bruno strikes up a friendship with Schmuel, a boy who is imprisioned in the camp. its fascinating to see how the story unfolds from the 9 year olds perspective. i think its a very cleverly writen, emotive book. i dont think i have ever cried so much in a book! I know many people feel this book doesnt actually hold all the much factual truth behind it, i however think its great. i can easily imagine what it would be like to be a nine year old child living in Germany during the war. its fascinating and very quick paced, and although its not the easiest book to get a feel for Germany, it shows in a really original way, the terrible history of this country. i really would recomend it for a quick read.
